When school started and Jem and I started walking past the Radley house again, I had fantasies that Boo would be normal and every time I walked by he would be sitting on his swing waiting to great me on my way to school. But, of course that would never happen.
One night Jem and I found out that Atticus had known about the time Jem, Dill and I snuck into the Radley backyard and Jem was almost shot. What else did he know?
My new third grade teacher, Ms. Gates, taught us about Hitler. She seemed to have strong opinions about Hitler and what he was doing to the Jewish.
Apparently, Bob Ewell wasn’t lying about getting everyone back. Atticus told me that Judge Taylor was home alone and heard someone prowling around and when he went to investigate, he found his screen door open and saw a shadow creeping away. Then, Mr. Ewell started to follow Helen Robinson to work and was whispering obscenities at her. Mr. Deas saw Mr. Ewell and threatened to call the sheriff and have him arrested if he didn’t leave Helen alone. After that he didn’t give her any more trouble. Aunty was worried and said that it seemed that he wanted to get everyone back that was connected to the case.
It was the night of the Halloween pageant and I was to be playing the Ham. My outfit was completely uncomfortable. On the way there it was very dark, and Cecil Jacobs jumped out and scared me and Jem half to death.
When we got inside Jem gave me thirty cents from Atticus and me and Cecil where allowed to go play games until it was time for us to get ready.
When I was waiting for my cue to enter on the stage, I fell asleep. I awoke about a couple minutes after I was called, but Ms. Merriweather was already angry. I was so embarrassed that when the pageant was over I would not let Jem take my costume off. I heard someone ask him I we wanted a ride home, but I could not see who it was because my costume was blocking the way.
It was very dark when we started home, and I could see anything. Jem said he heard noises coming from behind us, and soon enough I hear them too. We were almost to the road when someone started chasing after us. Jem screamed for me to run, but I lost my balance and fell. Something tore and ripped my costume. I could tell that the person was attacking Jem, but he broke free and dragged me almost the whole way to the rode. Then someone pulled him back, and I hear a loud crunch and Jem scream. I tried to run to him but someone grabbed me and squeezed me as hard as they could like they were trying to suffocate me. All of the sudden the person attacking me was pulled away and then all sounds of fighting and struggling stopped. I felt on the ground for Jem but only found a man smelling deeply of whiskey. Then I saw a man carrying Jem to our house.
Once I reached the house Aunt Alexandra rushed towards me making sure I was alright. Mr. Tate and the doctor where called. The doctor arrived first and he said that Jem would be fine. I noticed a man that I had never seen before standing in the corner of Jem’s room. It was the man that carried him in. When Mr. Tate arrived he said he checked out side and found Mr. Ewell laying on the ground under a tree with a knife stabbed inside him. He was dead.
