Immigration Project Reflection

Immigration Project Reflection
Kassidy Bullard

My literature Circle book was Funny In Farsi. This book was about an Iranian girl that moved to America, and her experiences throughout living here. Overall, I was happy that I got this book because Iran and Iranians are a topic that I did not really know a lot about. So, I got to learn a lot about Firoozeh Dumas, who is the author and the main character in the book, and about a whole different country and lifestyle, and what is was like for a foreigner to come to America. Something I learned that I thought was important during reading this book was that when Firoozeh and her family first arrived here they felt like complete outsiders and people treated them as if they were not humans. Nevertheless, I also realized that everyone, in some way and some point in there life feels that way. It can be at school or in a new country but everyone will always experience at least once. I think that I enjoyed the Lit Circles better this time because it just takes up a lot of time when you have to take time to meet with your group in class. I enjoy blogging much better because I feel like I can write more on the computer that would be harder for me to write or say aloud. I think that my group and I all really understood the book, and we were all on the same level. The book itself was an easy read for me, but I still enjoyed it.
For my painting, I chose to do another book cover. In my new book cover, you see the face of a girl and she has to flags next to her. The Iranian flag and the American flag. I chose to draw the girl because it represents what I think Firoozeh Dumas looks like, and I chose both flags because it represents to parts of her life. I think that there was a connection made between my painting and the book because it shows who Firoozeh is and where she came from. My final painting turned out better than I thought because it was very difficult to draw the face and make sure that every little detail looked good. Therefore, I think my painting turned out great. I think that if I would have taken more time on all the little details and made sure that they were not so rushed, then the whole painting would look neater. I have learned that from just reading a book, my imagination creates pictures in my head, and that I can put that down in a picture.
I feel like my interview went well. There was no tension and I feel like I already new her a little because of the previous interviews. I think that having us interview are participant three times and using different methods was good because it helped us not be so shy by having us make the questions and we feel like we are important. I learned that she had a son with her when she moved from the Philippines, she had to move here with her husband because her was in the military, and that if she had the choice she would have stayed in the Philippines with her family. Before this project, I did not know a lot about immigration, but now I know that all of the people that emigrated from different countries into America helped shape it and make what it is today, What with all of the different food, culture, and traditions. Overall, I think this project was very informal but also fun.
