Quote #1:
‘Dear Brainwashed Cowards,
You are nothing but puppets of the corrupt Shah. We will teach you a lesson you will never forget. Death to the Shah. Death to you.’
Anonymous letter
page 112
Significance:
I think this quote from the story is very important because it shows that some of the Americans can be nice to them, but many are not. They believe that if the Iranians that live in America do not follow what they believe, then they should not be there. So overall, many Americans can treat them well while other do not.
Character Judgment:
I think this gives a bad reputation to Americans in this story because it shows that Americans think they know everything, and if you are not doing something their way then you are automatically doing it wrong. This is something that still happens today, and it should be changed.
Question:
Do you think the people who wrote the letter were right? Why or why not?
Quote #2:
“Job prospects for fourteen-year-olds have never been rosy, so I settled on the old standby babysitting.”
Significance:
I think the significance of this quote is that it shows a small challenge for just Firoozeh, and not her whole family. She wanted a job to earn money, but there are not a lot of job opportunities. So, she had to settle for a very simple one.
Personnel Connection:
Being fourteen myself, I can understand what she is feeling. Sometimes I would like to get a real job instead of just babysitting. It tends to get quite frustrating and it makes you feel lousy because you want to do something other than watch kids, and you want to earn more money. I mean, it’s not like you can really ask for a raise in babysitting.
Question:
Do you ever wish you could get a real job? Why or why not?

Quote 1: [response] I don't think this is how Firoozeh's family should be treated. Firoozeh and her family shouldn't be judged by what their ethnicity but who they really are. [actions or personality] I wonder who it is. I bet Firoozeh's family has a different opinion about Americans.
Answer to Question: No! They are wrong because whoever that was threatened Firoozeh's family wishing them to die. Firoozeh and her family didn't even do anything wrong. They are like a perfect family and for some random person out of the blue to just put that letter under the door is just wrong and very low.
Quote 2: [response] I don't see why Firoozeh wants to work at an early age because she will regret it. Atleast focus on schoolwork for 9th and 10th grade then move onto jobs and driving. Babysitting isn't that bad, but she is going to have a tough time with the kids. It's not that easy.
Answer to Question: Well, I would like to get a simple job like babysitting. But as far as a real job goes, it would take alot of time out of my studying and schoolwork. I think that kids focus on getting the money too much and that isn't good because money doesn't lead you to success. I just want to wait 2 more years.

i like this quote because it just shows how mean people can get in the world. It is happening today and this very moment. its the most cruel thing you can do to someone. you can just not like their race you can accept them for who they are.
Question
i think that they are wrong because. because i know for a fact that they aren't going to do anything it was just an insult and they will keep insulting them.

this is true teens have social life and that life may include going to the movies or eating at a restaurant. and we cant complete those lives with just babysitting money.
Question
i do think that we need to get real jobs because i need money to get a new computer or go to the movies etc. the government should lower the working age to at least 15 years old.
Quote 1: I think that your quote was really interesting. And I think Firoozeh's family shouldn't be treated like that. I think that that is really stupid because The color of somebodies skin doesnt matter its who they are that really matters.
Question: No, because people come to America to be free and to escape all the bad things that are happening in there home country not to change there ways forever or else.
Quote 2: I think that firoozeh should start working at an early age because that way she can save up for things like college. Plus besides the fact that you'll have to work harder but it will pay off in the end because you will be more experienced than others and it would look good on a job application for the future. I think that if she wants to get a better job that pays more and is just a little bit more harder go for it because it will be better in the long run.
Question: I do sometimes wish that I could get a real job sometimes because that way I could make more money. Then plus having real jobs when your young could really pay off because then that will show up good in a job application and you will be more experienced than others.
